Native Wildlife Nesting Box – Supply, Installation & Maintenance

Australia boasts an amazing and diverse range of native fauna. Including our brightly coloured parrot species, laughing kookaburras, cheeky sugar gliders, the ever-present possums and the elusive micro bats to name a few. These native animals, and many others, use tree hollows for nesting and roosting. However, due to development and the removal of established native trees across Brisbane and the Gold Coast, there is a lack of appropriate habitat and nesting sites which has caused a dramatic decline in our native wildlife.

With native wildlife nesting boxes, it is possible for us to make a difference, right in your own garden!

While nesting boxes can never replace an old growth trees natural diversity of hollows, they can, with the appropriate management, provide a home for the native wildlife species local to the areas of Brisbane, Logan, Redlands or the Gold Coast where these trees have been lost

Maintaining your nesting or possum box with us!

It would be nice to think that once you have installed your nesting box that is it. Unfortunately, wildlife nesting and possum boxes require periodical monitoring and maintenance.

BUT why maintain your wildlife nesting box you ask?

A nesting box will ideally be maintained every year to ensure

  • That there is no danger and for the safety of both people and the wildlife using the property or area surrounding the nesting box
  • To minimise any potential impact or damage the box may cause to the tree
  •  To maximise the life and usage of the nesting box.

It is also a very rewarding way for you to determine the successes from the previous nesting season.

When is the best time to maintain my nesting or possum box?

February to April is the best time to think about cleaning/maintaining your nesting box, as most birds would have completed their nesting by then.

Species like bush tailed possums and microbats may be present year-round, so monitoring the box to determine when it is vacant or securing the animal within the box may be necessary, to undertake the maintenance program.

What will I need to get done and by who?
